Yamanashi Prefecture’s Mount Fuji Research Institute in Fujiyoshida is offering free guided walks through the surrounding forest during the Silver Week period. Guides introduce local nature, lava, wildlife, and Mt. Fuji history on a short route designed for children as well as adults.
Key Facts For Travelers
Who Can Join
The official guide says the program is open to everyone and suitable for children and adults. Courses that can accommodate wheelchairs or strollers are available, but visitors who need step-free routing should explain that requirement when reserving.
Groups of six or more must book in advance. Smaller parties also benefit from reserving because advance bookings are prioritized and same-day places depend on remaining capacity.
What The Walk Covers
The 45-minute program explores the forest around the research institute rather than the upper Mt. Fuji climbing routes. Past themes and visitor comments highlighted trees, scents, lava, birds, and the mountain’s formation and history.
This is a low-altitude learning walk, but participants should still wear comfortable closed shoes and clothing suited to the weather. Bring rain protection and water without treating the activity as a summit hike.
Weather And Arrival
The institute warns that weather or other conditions can cause a change or cancellation without advance notice. Calling before departure is recommended, especially on a wet or windy day.
The institute is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with last entry at 4:30 PM, and general admission is free. The official flyer cautions that searching the street address in some car-navigation systems may lead to the neighboring Biodiversity Center; drivers can enter the institute’s main phone number instead.
Traveler Actions
- Reserve in advance, and always reserve if your party has six or more people.
- State any wheelchair or stroller needs when booking the appropriate course.
- Arrive before the selected departure and wear comfortable closed footwear.
- Call ahead if weather may affect the program.
- Use the institute’s official map or phone-number navigation rather than relying only on an address search.
